Considering an
otoplasty in San Diego?
Otoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure to reshape
or "pin back" the ears. In the years after World War II, when GI haircuts
were popular, otoplasty or "ear pinning" was the most common cosmetic surgical
procedure.
Protruding ears are the most frequent congenital deformity of the head and neck area
affecting five percent of the general public. Ear deformities
affect both genders equally and may be unilateral or bilateral. The most
common causes of prominent ear are an underdeveloped, effaced, or
absent antihelix fold; an overdeveloped or excessively deep conchal bowl;
or the combination of the two. In many cases protruding ears result in an
abnormal appearance. Although hearing may be normal, the individual
may suffer significantly from peer ridicule and lowered self-esteem. (From www.plasticsurgery.org)
Otoplasty can be performed under a general anesthetic as an inpatient
procedure (which is generally the case for children undergoing the operation) but is often performed as an outpatient
procedure with a local anesthetic. The otoplasty procedure, which generally takes no more than three hours, typically involves a small
incision at the back of the ear where cartilage is reshaped or removed allowing the ear to rest closer to the head.
It may also involve creating a fold in the upper ear in order to fix "shell ears" or "lop ears" in which the folds are not
properly formed. (From www.wikipedia.org)
The incisions are placed behind the ears and recovery is
generally three to five days. There is minimal discomfort associated with otoplasty and the costs
range from approximately $3500 for adults to $5000 for children. The additional cost
for children is attributed to the need for an anesthesiologist and a more
advanced operating room and general anesthesia. Occasionally only one ear
is deformed and unilateral correction can be done at a lesser fee.
Aside from otoplasty, Dr. Splinter also offers face lifts. A face lift, or technically a lower face-neck lift,
is a complex procedure with more variations than almost any other operation in cosmetic surgery.
All face lifts have a common goal of repositioning sagging jowls, removing excess fat in the face and neck, and tightening
loose skin. We pride ourselves in producing natural results that age gracefully. Occasionally a face lift is combined with
a chin implant to produce better facial balance and/or to produce a more youthful, tight chin.
Dr. Splinter is located in La Mesa California and serves San Diego County
and East County. Dr. Splinter offers plastic surgery procedures including otoplasty, rhinoplasty,
eyelid surgery and also non-surgical procedures like BOTOX® injections, vein treatment, skin resurfacing, and many other
procedures. Call 1-619-460-2672 today to schedule an otoplasty in the San Diego area.
